Hook-up advice IRL
Hooking up IRL (in real life) after speaking online can be very exciting. You’ve got all that built-up sexual tension between one another and you’re probably ready to rip each other’s clothes off. However, when meeting someone you’ve met online in person, it’s wise to keep a few safety precautions in mind. Dating apps are great but they can’t provide in-depth background checks or ensure the person you’re going to meet will behave appropriately. No matter what, staying say is key when you meet up with a stranger.
Any time you meet a stranger there is an unfortunate risk of sexual and/or physical abuse or worse. While we don’t want to be all doom and gloom, we want to raise awareness of the importance of safety when hooking up. Below are six steps you can take to increase your safety when hooking up with people that you’ve met online.
- Always meet in public first
This is a non-negotiable when meeting a stranger. Make sure all first meetings are in a public space.
- Set clear expectations before you meet–up
Be clear about what you want and set any necessary boundaries. Make sure you understand each other’s wants, desires and anything off-limits.
- Use protection
Shielding yourself from sexually transmitted infections is paramount. Condoms are a must. You should also regularly get tested to ensure you’re not carrying anything sinister.
- Be respectful and don’t put any pressure on the other person
Although you may be hooking up only for sex, you should still be respectful towards one another and abide by any boundaries. You should also be polite about their bodies and any insecurities they have – make no judgement on looks at all.
- Let a trusted friend or family member know where and what time you’re meeting the person
Meeting someone online carries the risk of that person not being who you think they are. To avoid putting yourself in danger, make sure you let someone know beforehand where you’re going so that they can sound any alarm bells if they haven’t heard from you by a certain timeframe.
- Keep an eye on your drink at all times
Unfortunately, date-rape drugs are a risk for online hook-ups. While it’s fine to enjoy alcoholic beverages together, it’s best not to overdo it so that you can be aware of where your drink is at all times, and you’re in able to have consensual sex.
- Listen to your gut feeling
Your gut feeling never lies. Gut instinct, or intuition, is your immediate understanding of something – you just know if something feels right or off. Listening to your intuition helps you to avoid unhealthy relationships and/or dangerous situations. If you feel like the person is up to no good, make your excuses, leave and contact your trusted friend or family member who’s waiting in the wings for you.
